Amy Roy Ferneding Painting of Cross in the Woods
About a year ago an artist called the Museum and asked me for permission to paint the Cross in the Woods in Indian River, Michigan. I thought for a moment, then said to her that I could see no reason why she couldn’t paint the 55 foot Marshall Fredericks sculpture. Yesterday she sent me an email along with a photo of the painting. It’s beautiful. I asked her to write a short piece describing her inspiration behind the painting. Below is her inspiration, in her own words, and a photo of the wonderful rendition of Marshall Fredericks Cross in the Woods.

“While I was trying to brainstorm a creative way to thank my son’s educators at St. Xavier High School, a prominent Cincinnati Jesuit school, the necessity of marrying an iconic Catholic image with the natural world was of importance and significance to me. Recently I read a quote by P.C. Michael, “All nature is a reflection of God’s grace through Jesus Christ, our Lord, herald of life eternal.”
Practically every summer of my life, I have vacationed in northern Michigan, not far from Indian River, home to the Catholic Shrine, “Cross in the Woods”. I have an inculcated love of the outdoors and appreciation of the pristine surroundings of northern Michigan. Oddly enough, only once in my youth, over thirty years ago, I had stopped to visit the shrine with my grandmother. As I am not Catholic, I only recently attended an outdoor, midsummer Sunday mass. This experience was the closest to heaven that I may ever know. God’s glory shined brightly as the brilliant morning sun poured its warm rays over the multitude. Every parishioner, guest, family members’ face was radiantly peaceful. Some of us stood in the back behind those who sat in rows of bench-like pews while others comfortably lounged on the shaded grass facing the priest who said mass against a beautiful sylvan backdrop with Marshall Fredericks’ awe inspiring Corpus Christi suspended high above us all. This very moment crystallized for me that we were all one; I had experienced pure joy.
I had to share my joy in my work and pass it along. My final artistic products were gifts of framed prints that featured St. Ignatius Loyola’s Prayer of Generosity. “
